An American Tragedy

Given the state of the world today it's easy to see on TV the many wrongs that are happening in the world. It makes me wonder what living in this world will really be like 20, 10 or even 5 years from now. At any moment in time there is a war happening where two factions are at odds over who should be in control. Whose ideology is right, why should one group suffer while the other enjoys the fruits of the current victory? Take for instance the tragedy in Rwanda a few years ago. It is estimated that the death toll was 937,000 in just a brief period of time. That is a staggering number and it numbs the mind to think that this type of killing can happen in modern times. Granted, this number was caused by guns, knifes, and many other implements of personal destruction but I want to discuss a new kind of war.

This war has many casualties but no weapons, no rifles, and no WMD's are used to fight it. Not a single shot is fired, no anti personnel mines planted, tanks deployed, or helicopters sent in to destroy an al Qaeda leader. The strange thing though is that this war has more casualties than the military deaths of both great wars combined. Funny thing is these "non-military" deaths were totally preventable.

When I hear the Senator from Illinois mention that he was against the current military conflict we face I find it funny that throughout his life he has been fighting another war for his own personal gain. The war he continues to fight has produced a death toll of roughly 50 million people, a number that far exceeds the military war he is so against. Is he aware that his "battle" has produced such devastating numbers or is it part of the acceptable losses that are "factored in" to winning the war? This is a man who doesn't want to "punish" his family with these losses and he feels that no one should either. So the killing will continue.

We face an American tragedy of accepting the word of a man who has promised the world something for nothing but he offers nothing for something so precious as a voice for those who cannot speak. It's sad that a man could speak out against a conflict that is finally giving a voice to those who did not have it before but won't allow the shallowest of voices a chance to speak up so they can be counted among us all.
